SEATTLE, Wash. — The Red Sox have missed outfielder Chris Young’s production from the right side of the plate.
He was slashing .340/.404/.638/1.042 with two homers and eight doubles in 52 plate appearances vs. left-handed pitchers before straining his hamstring June 23 against the White Sox.
Young is with the Boston Red Sox on their road trip and he’s nearing a rehab assignment. He’s expected to begin an assignment when the Red Sox return home from this 11-game West Coast trip Monday.
“He was aggressive today,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “Today was a really good work day for him. The BP (batting practice) was much more aggressive. You could tell that the lower half was more engaged with the impact to the swings. He’ll run the bases on Friday. That’s what he’s scheduled for. And with everything pointing to a rehab assignment hopefully soon after we return.”
Farrell doesn’t have a sense yet on how many games Young will need during his upcoming rehab stint.
“You’re looking at a sizable number of games missed,” Farrell said. “He’s going to need some time to regain his timing (offensively).”
Koji Uehara, who the Red Sox placed on the disabled list with a right pectoral strain and who had a PRP injection July 22, has not thrown yet.
“The only thing that is new is a continued ramp up of exercises,” Farrell said. “He’ll put a ball back in his hand once we get off this road trip. That’s the timing of all this right now.”
