Chris Young is certainly stoked that his fifth album, “I’m Comin’ Over,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard country charts in November.
And he’s even happier that in addition to co-writing nine of its 12 tracks he also co=produced the set with friend and fellow songwriter Corey Crowder.
“The biggest thing is producing this one, yeah,” Young, 31, says by phone from his home in Nashville. “I was really glad the label let me do my own thing and try something that was really different from the last record (2013’s ‘A.M.’), whereas they could’ve been, ‘No, we don’t know if we trust this ‘cause it’s just such a new process.
“But it’s my first No. 1 (album) as a producer, so it’s a big deal for me on that end.”

Young says that in addition to tackling some different kind of topics on “I’m Comin’ Over,” he and Crowder also wanted to make the album stand apart sonically from its predecessors. “I think you’re constantly evolving and going different things as an artist,” Young explains. “You don’t want to make the same record over and over and over. I don’t think you can do that. Every record has to be its own thing. So there’s some influences and different layers of stuff that we did here that you wouldn’t have heard in the past.”
Young says the playing flavor of the album was helped by having some of his touring musicians in the studio, particularly steel guitarist Terry Crisp. There was also a greater effort to treat each track as its own entity rather than find an overall sound for the album, which makes it the most diverse entry in his catalog.
“We took a lot of time on each individual song,” says Young, who’s scored a pair of No. 1 Country Airplay hits, “I’m Comin’ Over” and “Think Of You,” his duet with Cassadee Pope,” from the album. “It was just a different way of recording — different room, different groups of musicians, the way we miced my voice was different. Just a lot of changes.
“That can be a little bit scary. We changed so much stuff going in that we were like, ‘I dunno, man, is this really what we want to do?’ But I think it worked out well.”
